Manuscript description

Illuminated miniature, initial and borders from f.1r of MS A.4(II), the Liber Sextus Decretalium of Boniface VIII, with gloss of Johannes Monachus (English, c. 1335-50). The miniature (detail left) shows an enthroned Pope Boniface VIII, flanked by red-hatted cardinals, receiving the finished Liber Sextus from the hands of a kneeling figure. This figure wears the black pileus of a civil lawyer. The borders incorporate heralds with trumpets bearing banners, and two shields. The arms are those of Mortimer, Brewes, and possibly Norwich.
