True Crime series written by Johnian scoops seven awards at the Emmys
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace is about homophobia, internalized and externalized"
A drama about the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace was one of the big winners of last night’s Emmy awards - and it was created by a graduate of St John’s.
True Crime mini-series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story picked up three awards at the 70th Emmy Awards, including one for the show’s writer and Executive Producer, Tom Rob Smith.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace fought off competition from Patrick Melrose and The Alienist to win the award for Outstanding Limited Series. The show’s director Ryan Murphy also won Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series and Darren Criss, who played serial killer Andrew Cunanan, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series.

The show received 18 Emmy nominations in total, and won a further four awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last weekend for costumes, make-up, hairstyling, and casting. With a total of seven awards, The Assassination of Gianni Versace was one of the Emmy’s big winners, only Game of Thrones, Saturday Night Live and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home more.
Tom Rob Smith, writer and Executive Producer of The Assassination of Gianni Versace, received the award for Outstanding Limited Series alongside the show’s cast and crew. Smith was also nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, but lost out to Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker.
However, in the acceptance speech for the Outstanding Limited Series award, Director Ryan Murphy highlighted the importance of the show’s writing, particularly its focus on the lives of Andrew Cunnan’s forgotten victims, Jeff Trail and David Mason.
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace is about homophobia, internalized and externalized,” said Murphy. “One out of every four LGBTQ people in this country will be the victim of a hate crime. We dedicate this award to them … And mostly this is for the memory Jeff and David and Gianni, and for all those lives taken too soon.”

After the ceremony Tom Rob Smith tweeted a photo of the cast and crew posing with their Emmys and expressed his joy,saying “So Happy #ACSVersace won”.
