Three Fellows of St John’s College appointed Professors

Three Senior Academics at St John’s College have been awarded Professorships.

Máire Ní Mhaonaigh, Tuomas Knowles, and Mete Atatüre have been appointed Professors, with effect from 1 October 2015.

Dr Máire Ní Mhaonaigh, College Lecturer and Director of Studies in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, has been appointed Professor of Celtic and Medieval Studies in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. Dr Ní Mhaonaigh’s research focuses on contacts between peoples in the medieval period, and her academic interests include medieval Irish language, literature and history, the Vikings, Hiberno-Norse relations and medieval Welsh language and literature.

Dr Tuomas Knowles is College Lecturer in Nanoscience at St John’s, and he has been appointed Professor of Physical Chemistry and Biophysics in the Department of Chemistry. Dr Knowles’ recent research topics include the theoretical analysis of one-dimensional growth of breakable structures and developing ways of measuring the spread of malfunctioning proteins that characterise various diseases.

Dr Mete Atatüre, College Lecturer in Physics and Director of Studies in Physics and Astrophysics, has been appointed Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics. Dr Atatüre’s research interests focus on the investigation and control of the quantum mechanical and optical properties of solid-state systems, such as semiconductors, diamond as well as single-atom thick materials, which offer numerous opportunities for future technologies.
