Stephanie Childress follows up a sensational appearance on BBC Young Musician with a performance in College

Talented young violinist and first-year music student at St John’s, Stephanie Childress, will perform a piece she played in the Strings Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year at the May Concert at St John’s on 13 June.

Last month, Stephanie received glowing praise from the judges of the BBC competition after a performance demonstrating immense professionalism, poise and polish.

Stephanie, who is from London, gave an impressive recital of music with pieces including Eugene Ysaye’s ‘Obsession’, ‘Zapateado’ by Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate and Saint Saens’ fourth movement of his ‘Sonata No.1’.

The judges, who included Professor Julian Lloyd Webber and international soloist Thomas Gould, praised Stephanie’s “amazing opening” and told viewers she has “something really special”.

Speaking to the BBC just after her performance Stephanie said “It was such a warm atmosphere. All the nerves disappeared when I walked on [stage] and I just enjoyed it”.

Stephanie, who is just 17 years old, has been playing violin since the age of six and was made leader of the National Youth Orchestra in 2015.

Determined to pursue a career in music, Stephanie left school at 15 after taking her GCSEs early and squeezing three A-Levels into a year. Stephanie’s ambition is to become a conductor and during her time at St John’s she has indulged this passion, conducting orchestras in addition to playing in many concerts.

Since it was established 38 years ago, BBC Young Musician has developed a reputation for finding superstar musicians.
