St John's works with Liverpool Schools

At the beginning of March, the Schools Liaison Officers from St John’s & Magdalene College teamed up to deliver a morning of comprehensive advice about Cambridge. The event was generously hosted by Calderstones School, who also arranged for students from several other schools in south Liverpool to attend. Two sessions provided what Bryan McDonagh, a member of staff at Calderstones, described as ‘excellent insight’ into: the choice of courses, the collegiate system, student life, and preparing applications.

The sessions included several opportunities for the students to reflect on their own plans and interests during which they realised that their academic interests could be pursued in numerous Cambridge courses, and began to investigate the less well-known subjects to find the one that might be perfect for them.

As Mr McDonagh commented, ‘the presenters sold Cambridge as a fun place to study but emphasised the commitment needed’. The students responded positively to the breaking down of misconceptions, and left having realised that Cambridge is a place where they could both focus on academic passions as well as fit in socially.
