St John’s students awarded scholarships, prizes and Fellowships

Four St John’s students have been awarded prestigious prizes, scholarships and Fellowships by various academic institutions during September and October due to their outstanding work and achievements.

Fourth year Physics graduate Steffen Illig was awarded the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Prize, which is awarded to PhD students nominated by their supervisors. The Prize offers follow-on funding to students whose PhD research has been supported by the EPSRC, in order to help them increase the impact of their PhD.

Theo Heymann, first year Engineering undergraduate, was awarded the IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) Undergraduate Scholarship. The Scholarship lasts for four years and is worth £8000, with students receiving £2000 each year.

Paidraig Condon, first year Pure Mathematics postgraduate, was awarded the Robert Gardiner Memorial Scholarship for 2015-16. The Scholarships are intended to assist or enable students from Irish universities to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge.

Ruben do Vale, Biological Science graduate, was awarded a Boehringer Ingelheim PhD Fellowship, for outstanding junior scientists who wish to undertake a PhD project in basic biomedical research. Fellowship holders are provided with a monthly stipend as well as comprehensive support during their PhD phase.
