Schools liaison
St John’s College is committed to admitting the most talented, creative and committed students, regardless of their social and educational background.
To this end, the college employs a full-time schools liaison officer (SLO), who also plays a role in university initiatives designed to promote higher and further education.
St John’s works with all types of schools and colleges right across the United Kingdom. We are always delighted to hear from any institution that would like to be involved with us. We are eager to experiment with new events and formats, so please do contact us if you think we can do anything for you. In particular, the schools liaison officer is available to visit schools, sixth forms, and further education colleges. He can run presentations and Q&A sessions tailored to individual needs and which can cover subjects like university life in general, life at St John’s and Cambridge in particular, advice about choosing a subject and college, writing personal statements, interview preparation, student finance, and information about the admissions process. We are also keen that teachers and parents feel well-informed about Cambridge and its admissions procedures; to that end, the SLO can run similar sessions for them during lunch hours and in the evening. With enough notice, it may be possible also to have some St John's students and a tutor attend. If you already have an event organised – a parents’ evening, for example – and would like the SLO to present something at that, please contact us using the details at the bottom of this page. We are also very keen to welcome groups of students into St John's, on both day and residential visits, for the whole range of workshops listed above in addition to other social and educational activities in and around the college.
As part of the University’s Area Link scheme, St. John’s is associated with six local education authorities – Bolton, Rochdale, Blackburn with Darwen, Shropshire, Telford with Wrekin, and Lambeth. If you are from a school or college in any of these areas and would like to become involved with St John’s, please do get in touch.
We also work with other bodies in Cambridge, such as the students’ union and the central admissions office, on events like the shadowing scheme, the UCAS conventions, and the Oxbridge conferences.
We are also keen to support our current students in any activities they undertake with schools in their local area. If you are a student and have been in contact with a school, our SLO would be very grateful if you could take the time to provide some details. This allows us to keep records of which schools have had contact with St John's, to provide support and advice to students undertaking such activities, and possibly to establish a supportive relationship between the college and the school: School visits form for students (logged in students only).
This map shows the contacts made by the schools liaison officer at St John's since January 2010. Blue icons denote a visit made out to a school or college, whilst pink icons signify an event hosted at St John's College. Click for details. Many icons are clustered by their close neighbours, especially in Cambridge and London, so it is often necessary to zoom in first in order to see all icons.
