Quincentenary Weeks
As part of the Quincentenary celebrations, St John’s mounted two extra-special Quincentenary Weeks as a celebration of all that is great about our College. Over 1,700 Johnians and their guests attended events over the two weeks in July and September, as well as Fellows, staff and students.
Johnians were able to stay for up to two nights in College and enjoy a range of activities. There were tastings of the College wines, port and Quincentenary champagne, as well as a special visit from the Cheese Detective. Guests enjoyed tours of the College and the Library and some even hunted for ghosts!
As part of the weekend celebrations, Johnians enjoyed garden parties and a Family Party. The College was delighted to welcome parents and children of all ages to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the College.
During the Weeks, we were delighted to welcome notable Johnians to deliver talks on a variety of subjects, covering both the arts and sciences. Nobel Prize winner Eric Maskin discussed how parliaments should be elected while Professor Sir Roger Penrose gave a whistle-stop tour of the universe. The Palmerston Room was packed to bursting for a hilarious talk by actor and comedian Hugh Dennis. Both Sir Jonathan Miller and Sir Derek Jacobi participated in ‘in conversation’ events covering their long and distinguished careers.
Thank you to all who attended the Weeks. We hope to see you again soon.
