New edition of oldest manuscript

A scholarly edition of the College’s oldest manuscript has just been published by Brepols. Manuscript C.9 is a rare 10th century Irish Psalter, known as the ‘Southampton Psalter’ as it came to the College via Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton. It contains the text of the psalms, extensively glossed in both Latin and Old Irish, with a full page illustration at the opening of each group of 50 psalms.

Pádraig Ó’Néill’s edition of the Psalterium Suthanthoniense is published in the Celtic sub-series of the Corpus Christianorum continuatio mediaeualis. A copy is available in the Rare Books Reading Room.

A full description of the manuscript from M.R. James’ catalogue may be found here.
