A. Male, Commonplace Book. English, nineteenth century.

[Arthur Male (d.1828?)]: autograph manuscript commonplace book. Includes a copy of a prize declamation, delivered in the Chapel of St John’s College, Cambridge, in 1807. Also contains lecture notes and extracts from legal reports. A collection of typescript prescriptions are pasted in the back pages of the book, with suggestions for the treatment of a range of ailments, including rheumatism, sciatica, and bee stings. Male was admitted to St John’s College, Cambridge, in 1804, as a Bishop of Lincoln’s scholar; he obtained a B.A. 1808, M.A. 1811.  He was admitted as a student of Lincoln’s Inn in 1806 and was called to the bar in 1811.
