St John's College U.66

Catalogue of books from the library of Charles Taylor, August 1908.

'Catalogue of books St John's Lodge August 1908.' This catalogue lists the printed books and manuscripts found in St John's College Master's Lodge upon the death of Charles Taylor (1840-1908), Master from 1881. Taylor was an accomplished mathematician and Hebraist (see ODNB). The list records books and journals in the Lodge's three Oak Rooms, the Book Room, study, and corridor. Each entry gives author, title and imprint. In the margin beside each item appears an indication of its subsequent ownership: a blue ink stamp for 'St John's Lib. Camb.', a red ink stamp for 'Univ. Lib. Camb.', or the pencil initials of an individual. The initials M.S.T., for Margaret Sophia Taylor, appear frequently, as do those of H.E.J.B. (Henry Edward James Bevan). At the end of the volume appear two tables, totalling the number of volumes taken by Cambridge University Library (521) and St John's College Library (348). Kept loose within the volume is a 'List of books selected by Fellows from Dr Taylor's Library' (4p). Each entry gives basic bibliographic details and the Fellow's name. The volume also contains a letter from Margaret Taylor to J.H.A. Hart, Librarian, dated 21 Jan. 1909, in which she thanks the Library staff for their assistance.
