Guillaume Postel, 'Le Prime Nove del altro Mondo'. Italian, seventeenth century

Guillaume Postel, humanist, cartographer, orientalist and herbalist (1510-81): 'Le Prime Nove del altro Mondo, Cio é: l'admirabile historia e non meno necessaria et utile da esser letta et intesa da ogni uno che stupenda intitulata La Vergine Venetiana: parte vista, parte provata, et fidelissimamente scritta per Gulielmo Postello, primogenito della Restitutione, et Spirituale Padre di essa Vergine / Jeremiae 31 / Creavit Dominus Jehovah / novum super terram / Appresso del Auttore / 1555'. In another hand, on fo. 35v: 'Di questa Vergine Veneziana ne parla Lodovico Domenichi nella sua istoria di detti e fatti degni de memoria etc, nel lib. 10 pag. in. 567 del' edizione del Giolito 4to del 1557'. The copy is of somewhat later date, perhaps early seventeenth century. Cowie remarks on the extreme rarity of the book from which this copy has been made.

230x175 mm. 36 fos (36 blank, modern foliation). Bequeathed to the College by Antonio Ferrari, 1744 (printed Ferrari Bequest plate at fo. 1r). Small College bookplate (eighteenth century) at fo. 1r.

A single hand; a clean copy. Paper. Unusual early coloured paper covers, the classmark on two eighteenth-century paper labels at the spine.
