The Hoyle Family

Hoyle was born in the village of Gilstead, near the town of Bingley, west Yorkshire, on 24 June 1915. His mother, Mabel, had trained at the Royal College of Music, and later worked as a cinema pianist in Bingley. His father, Ben, was a violinist and wool merchant who served as a machine gunner in the First World War.
