Johnians elected Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering

Two Johnians have joined the Royal Academy of Engineering after being elected to the Fellowship at the Academy’s AGM on 15 September 2014.

Professor Robin Bloomfield and Dr Paul Woollin were two of 59 new Fellows elected this year in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to Engineering.

Professor Robin BloomfieldProfessor Robin Bloomfield came to St John’s in 1973 and received a BA in Natural Sciences in 1976. He is currently Professor of Software and System Dependability at City University, London, and his research focuses on the dependability and safety of computer-based systems. He is Founding Partner of specialist consultancy Adelard LLP. Professor Bloomfield was an independent member of the UK Nuclear Safety Advisory Group, a member of the UK Cabinet Office Information Assurance Research and Co-ordination Group, and the UK member of NATO Research Task on dual use technologies. He also co-chaired for the EU the 2007 Joint US-EU workshop on ICT-Enabled Critical Infrastructures and Interdependencies.

Dr Paul WoollinDr Paul Woollin received a BA in Natural Sciences at St John’s in 1984, then a PhD in 1990. He joined the Materials Department at TWI in 1992, specialising in the metallurgy and weldability of stainless steels and nickel alloys. He became Head of the Materials Department in 2000 and was appointed Director of Research in 2010, setting the strategic direction for 280 research staff. Dr Woolin’s research and consultancy work has led to huge safety benefits for industry.
