Generating Genius visit to St John's

On a chilly day in February, St John’s welcomed a group of students into the college on a visit organised in conjunction with the charity Generating Genius ( www.generatinggenius.org.uk). Generating Genius’s Uni Genius programme provides opportunities and guidance to help gifted Londoners from disadvantaged backgrounds towards places at top universities. They collaborated with the Schools Liaison Officer at St John’s to arrange a day that involved introductory talks, tours of St John’s College, a meeting with the Admissions Tutor, and the chance to chat to current students.

All of the students who visited were highly motivated, and keen to take advantage of the opportunity. For several, misgivings about the idea of applying to Cambridge were dispelled. Group leader Charlie Michael commented that 'The students from the Uni Genius Programme found their visit to St John's College useful and informative. They benefited from being able to put questions to the Admissions Tutor about what they need to do to prepare, and from speaking to current undergraduates. The students left with a real sense of what would be required of them and with renewed enthusiasm.’
