Deo nominated in the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2017

Deo, a recording by The Choir of St John’s, Cambridge, has been nominated for the Choral Award in the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2017, and you can show your support by voting to make it the category winner.

Deo, which was released in May, was the first recording for the College's new recording label, an imprint on Signum Classics. It features a collection of sacred works by Jonathan Harvey, who was an undergraduate and then an Honorary Fellow at St John's; two of the works – The Annunciation and The Royal Banners – were written especially for the Choir. The recording also features organ works Toccata for organ and tape and Laus Deo, as well as the popular anthems Come, Holy Ghost and I Love the Lord.

Deo has received much critical acclaim, with the Observer stating that it is “ecstatic” and “richly challenging”, BBC Radio 3 presenter Andrew McGregor pronouncing it “absolutely outstanding”, and leading conductor Simon Toyne describing it as “one of the most significant choral recordings of recent times?”.

There are seven categories in the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2017, which include the Opera Award, the Concerto Award and the Choral Award, and three recordings have been shortlisted per category, making a total of 21 recordings all chosen by the BBC’s jury of critics from last year’s five-star discs. You can show your support by voting to make Deo the Choral Award category winner.

The winner of the award is decided by public vote, which is open until Friday 24 February. To vote for Deo to win, visit the BBC Music Magazine Awards voting site – once you have selected your choice, you will need to add your details at the bottom for the vote to be registered. Everyone who votes will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two copies of each of the nominations. The winner will be announced on 19 April at a ceremony at London’s Kings Place.
