Music in College

In common with all other activities, the various music groups within the College are organised by undergraduates. There is a wide range of student-run musical activities at St John's. The Music Society Committee is responsible for many of the musical events and opportunities open to members of the college.

FACILITIES

The Music Society issues cards at the beginning of each year allowing you to use the four practice rooms in the Fisher Building. Music Room 2 has two pianos, and Music Room 4 has a Boston baby grand (essentially a machine-made Steinway). Rehearsals can take place in the New Music Room (NMR) in First Court and, depending on your standard, you are able to play the Steinway piano in the NMR and the harpsichord in the Old Library. Discussions are under way with regard to the use of the Boiler Room as a rehearsal venue for rock bands and other amplified music.

NMR RECITALS

The New Music Room, located in First Court by the Main Gate Porters' Lodge, is St John's venue for student-run recitals. We hold two main recital series, a formal recital series on Wednesday nights at 9pm and a more relaxed series on Thursdays at 1:15pm. For more information, please visit our NMR Recitals page.

EVENTS FOR COLLEGE MEMBERS

Twice a term, the Master opens his doors for Master's Lodge Recitals. Musicians of great renown come to perform here, and it is an important part of the life of the college community. Once a year, usually in Lent term, a concert is held for the Fellows and Junior Members of St John’s in the Senior Combination Room, arguably one of the finest rooms in College. Performers are invited to take part in the hour long concert, after which there is a wine reception in the candlelit surroundings.

Alternatively, bands, chamber groups and soloists can audition to play during May Week at the June event and the May Ball.

CHAPEL

As well as the various concerts mentioned above, there are many other sources of music at John’s, not least in Chapel. On alternate Saturdays, organists from all over Cambridge give lunchtime recitals on the Hill/Mander organ in our chapel. Organ recitals also take place before Evensong on Sundays at 6pm, and never fail to inspire. For more information, have a look at our Organ Recitals page. Choral Evensong takes place on six nights of the week. The Chapel Choir is world-renowned and never fails to inspire, whether one is religious or not. More information is available on the Chapel and Choir page.

ST JOHN'S SINGERS

Throughout the year the Music Society runs a "come and sing" choir (St John’s Singers) open to anybody who enjoys singing. Once a term, they sing a Choral Eucharist in Chapel, as well as taking part in the Term Concerts. It is a relaxed and fun choir, singing a variety of secular and sacred works to suit all tastes. For more information, please consult the St John's Singers' page.

ST JOHN'S COLLEGE ORCHESTRA

The college orchestra has recently been re-formed after many requests. This is open to members of college and members of the university. For more information, please consult the College Orchestra page.

JAZZ

St John's is an essential part of the jazz scene in Cambridge, with Jazz@John's hosting bands from all over the University and beyond.
