'Civita Vecchia', 1854

Pen and ink sketch showing the town of Civitavecchia in Italy
Pen and ink on paper (Folio Box 1/4)

The earliest of Butler’s finished sketches in the Library’s collection.

Butler did this during his second visit to Italy with his family, over the winter of 1853-4. Beginning their vacation in August 1853, the family travelled through Switzerland to Rome and Naples. Butler missed a half-year of school.
