Attracting The Best »

Outreach and Access

The College has an enviable record of providing opportunities for the brightest young people from around the world, regardless of their social or economic circumstances.

Our strategy for widening access includes the appointment of new outreach staff, an enhanced Admissions Office, summer schools for pupils and teachers, mentoring programmes and innovative web-based communications.

Scholarships, Bursaries and Student Support

Tuition fees are now a fact of life, and in 2011–12 the tuition fee for UK/EU undergraduates will be £3,375 per year. From 2012 the government will be raising the cap on tuition fees to £9,000 to compensate for the reduced teaching budgets allocated to universities. In order to attract the best students from all backgrounds, the College must be able to offer financial support to all those who need it.

We need more scholarships and bursaries to encourage and reward excellence, supplemented by enhanced travel and book grants and funding for vacation research projects. There must be greater resources available for students who encounter unexpected financial hardship.

Increased funding will also enable us to attract the most able graduate students from around the world and to recruit as widely as possible.

Furthering Academic Excellence »

Research

The annual award of Research Fellowships, for which the brightest young academics compete, is essential to the College's continuing intellectual prosperity.

At present an average of four Research Fellowships is awarded each year, and we aim to create at least two more.

Learning and Teaching

The supervision system is the cornerstone of Cambridge's undergraduate education. However, academics are under immense pressure to balance their own research with increasing teaching responsibilities.

We wish to strengthen our unique tutorial and supervision system. We require more College Teaching Officers, the payment of appropriate salaries, increased administrative backup and the introduction of a formal training and support programme.

It is imperative that we address the changing nature of students' learning needs, including additional specialist teaching, enhanced library facilities, the latest technological resources and far greater opportunities for vacation study and research.

Enhancing College Life »

Facilities and Buildings

The College must balance the conservation of its historic environment with the need to provide world-class facilities.

A particular focus of the Campaign is the redevelopment of the Divinity School. The refurbishment of this fine Victorian building will provide teaching rooms, lecture halls, departmental offices and a base for the performing arts, enhancing the facilities of the College.

Merton Hall has been refurbished to provide much-needed teaching sets, thanks to funds raised by the Campaign.

The School of Pythagoras also requires restoration, and will be converted into an archive for additional storage of library resources.

The Cultural, Sporting and Social Experience

Life at St John’s is not just about studying. We wish to raise funds for Field Sports (see the attached document), the LMBC, our wonderful Choir, the performing arts and other areas of College life. Such activities develop the talents and skills of our students and play an important part in College life.

Strengthening The Endowment »

St John's owes its existence to the generosity of countless donors and benefactors. The endowment built over five centuries is now some £300 million and provides critical support for all areas of College life.

To achieve our aims and objectives, we must significantly increase our financial resources. Strengthening the endowment is a first and crucial step for securing a vibrant, independent and successful future for St John's.
